Longview Philanthropy, in collaboration with Future Impact Group, is offering funding to support individuals exploring a career move into research, policy or practice concerning the consciousness, sentience, moral status or welfare of AI systems ("digital minds"). Future Impact Group facilitates networking for selected fellows and helps Longview review applications.
Who They'd Like to Hear From
This non-exhaustive list of profiles may fit the programme:
๐ A current or prospective graduate student seeking support to study digital minds issues
๐ค A technical AI researcher exploring research topics, events and organisations to select a high-impact role
๐ฃ A communications professional pivoting to digital minds work (running surveys, building experts' platforms)
๐ A non-profit entrepreneur spending a year exploring the space to identify an organisation to start up
๐๏ธ A civil servant, diplomat or legal researcher exploring sensible digital-minds policy
๐งญ A participant in an AI safety fellowship (such as MATS or FIG) continuing with their mentor on digital minds topics
If you're not represented above but believe you're a strong fit, you're encouraged to apply.
Requirements & Selection Criteria
Successful applicants are typically degree students or people with an established mentorship relationship looking to spend dedicated time developing skills and exploring roles, or exceptionally talented individuals identifying high-impact organisations to start. Applications are assessed on three criteria, weighed together:
1๏ธโฃ A strong, demonstrated interest in digital sentience and the surrounding questions, with serious prior engagement, an understanding of how the field relates to broader AI risk, and a considered view of where useful contributions lie
2๏ธโฃ Evidence of capacity for impactful work (prior achievements, employment history, academic record and references)
3๏ธโฃ Promising plans for fellowship activities and potential future work, ideally including mentors or advisors
Priority goes to applicants who couldn't easily pursue this work without Longview funding, or whose existing funding comes with limiting restrictions.
