🔷 Activity Details
Description
STORM project is looking for 3 volunteers to join a local community project in Namayumba, Uganda where together we will help create a youth vocational education center. The activities include helping local builders during the erection of a training facility as well as setting up a greenhouse/own vegetable garden. The volunteers will learn how to collect and utilize rain water for sanitation and gardening. Parallel to those activities, the volunteers will also engage with children from St. Joseph Primary School in Namayumba as well as in recruiting local unemployed youth with vulnerable background who can join the carpentry, dressmaking and weaving workshops at the UYSTO center. The project is about rural community support and resilience through empowerment of the local youth. We welcome motivated, sociable and energetic volunteers who would like to join an active, intense and dynamic program with immediately visible result and impact.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers will share rooms in a dorm located within the UYSTO vocational center. Rooms are furnished with bunk beds and wardrobes. There is common kitchen, bathrooms, eating and recreation area. Monday to Friday the meals will be prepared at the camp by UYSTO staff. Volunteers will manage their own meals during the weekends, either cooking together or individually. Local markets and supermarkets provide affordable food options. STORM project will cover a return ticket to Entebbe, Uganda and local transfer to and from Namayumba, Wakiso district. During project activities volunteers will walk.
Training during the activity
Pre-departure training will be provided by Mondo (EE) and IOA (BG), covering project expectations, cultural adaptation, and logistical preparations. The training will be online prior to departure in 2 sessions of 2 hours each. On-site training, coordinated by UYSTO, will cover: - Introduction to the local communities and project objectives. - Uganda lifestyle, economy, culture and traditions. - Workshops/Observation practice on youth recruitment and engagement. - Practical training in construction and gardening. - Weekly reflection sessions to share experiences and plan activities.
Participant profile
We are looking for 3 volunteers who are passionate about youth work and community engagement. No previous experience is expected, volunteers with fewer opportuntinities are welcome and will be supported accordingly. Candidates must be 18 to 35 years old, reside in one of the eligible countries (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Turkey) and have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training. When adding together this new volunteering opportunity and any previous participation in EU volunteering programmes, the total duration cannot exceed 12 months.
