๐ฎ๐น ESC Volunteering in Italy ๐ฟ Leivi in Action for Land Protection ๐๏ธ Dry Stone Walls & Landslide Prevention, Liguria ๐ฎ๐น
A unique environmental volunteering opportunity in Leivi, Liguria, Italy is bringing together an international ESC team to protect one of Europe’s most fragile and beautiful landscapes. Working alongside local professionals and the Municipality of Leivi, volunteers will carry out hands-on maintenance and monitoring of the region’s historic dry stone wall terraces โ a critical intervention to prevent landslides caused by heavy rainfall and years of neglect. This project is part of the VEIL-CORPS ESC programme co-funded by the European Union. โ ๏ธ Important: only organisations associated with the VEIL-CORPS project can send their volunteers.
๐ Did You Know? The dry stone terraces of Liguria are a masterpiece of traditional agricultural engineering โ built without mortar over centuries by local farmers to cultivate steep hillsides that would otherwise be impossible to farm. Recognised as a UNESCO-associated heritage technique, dry stone walling is now a critical tool for preventing landslides and erosion across the Mediterranean, and its maintenance is considered a matter of both cultural preservation and climate resilience.
What Will You Do?
๐งฑ Dry Stone Wall Maintenance: Carry out hands-on maintenance work on the region’s historic dry stone terraces โ repairing and reinforcing walls that have degraded due to years of neglect and increasingly intense rainfall events.
๐ Land Monitoring: Participate in the monitoring of vulnerable terrain alongside local professionals and the VerdeRAM team โ identifying areas at risk and contributing to preventive action before the next rainfall season.
๐ฑ Agricultural & Environmental Work: Support broader agricultural and environmental maintenance activities in the terraced landscape of Leivi, working with a company that combines traditional farming knowledge with modern IT-based approaches.
๐ค Community Life & Collaboration: Live and work as part of an international volunteer group โ sharing daily community life, meals, and the unique experience of contributing to a real environmental protection effort in one of Italy’s most scenic regions.
๐ Did You Know? Liguria is one of the Italian regions most severely affected by climate-related landslides โ with extreme rainfall events increasing in both frequency and intensity due to climate change. In recent years, entire hillside villages have been damaged or destroyed by mud and debris flows. Volunteer-supported terrace restoration programmes like this one are among the most cost-effective and community-centred responses to this growing crisis.
