Are you a student or recent graduate in international relations, political science, law, security studies, or a related field โ and interested in contributing to UN counter-terrorism work from inside one of Europe's most vibrant capitals? The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) is offering two internships in its Countering Terrorist Travel Section, Special Projects and Innovation Branch, based in Budapest, Hungary. Interns will support programme management activities related to countering terrorist travel โ including research, data analysis, communications, event support, and stakeholder engagement. It is also a growing hub for international organisations and UN offices, chosen for its central European location, excellent connectivity, and cost-effectiveness relative to Western European capitals. The UNOCT chose Budapest as a key operational base precisely because of its strategic position between East and West.
What Will You Do?
๐จCreate designs and visual materials using relevant software โ PowerPoint presentations, promotional materials, announcements, flyers, and video production content that conform to UN standards
๐ฃSupport the preparation of public information materials โ including event concept notes and other communications outputs for the Countering Terrorist Travel Section
๐คSupport the organisation of desk-to-desk meetings with regional actors, civil society organisations, Member States, regional organisations, and other entities
๐ฌConduct research, assist in data collection, and provide analysis on relevant topics related to countering terrorist travel and international security
๐Assist in situation monitoring โ actively scanning and assessing developments to maintain an accurate and up-to-date understanding of relevant situations
๐๏ธAssist in maintaining databases and support the review of key reports and publications produced by the section
๐Attend meetings as assigned and produce reports thereof โ contributing to the documentation and follow-up of the section's activities
๐ก Did You Know? The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) was established by the UN General Assembly in 2017 to provide strategic leadership for the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. Its Countering Terrorist Travel Section โ the unit this internship sits within โ focuses specifically on the cross-border movement of foreign terrorist fighters and the use of border management systems, advance passenger information, and biometrics to detect and disrupt terrorist travel. This is one of the most operationally consequential areas of UN security work.
Eligibility & Requirements
๐You are enrolled in or have completed a graduate programme (master's or PhD level) โ OR you are in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor's level or equivalent)
๐ฃ๏ธFluency in spoken and written English is required โ knowledge of an additional UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage
๐ปComputer literacy in standard software applications is required โ design skills and experience with visual communication tools are particularly relevant for this role
๐You demonstrate a genuine interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
โ ๏ธApplicants who have previously served six months in total as an intern in any UN Common System organisation are not eligible. Applicants who are close relatives of active UN staff members are also not eligible
