Join the STARRY project in Nepal for a 180-day volunteering journey with Volunteers Initiative Nepal (ViN), starting in October 2026.
Following the recent devastating floods in Nepal, volunteers will initially support ViN’s relief and community recovery efforts, assisting affected and vulnerable communities according to local needs. As the response develops, volunteers will also contribute to ViN’s long-term community empowerment activities at the NaraTika Community Learning Center in Okhaldhunga.
Activities will focus particularly on children and women, including child protection and development, life-skills and creative activities, educational support, women’s empowerment, digital literacy, basic English, community awareness and entrepreneurship initiatives.
This is an opportunity to combine humanitarian solidarity with long-term community development and stand alongside communities as they recover and rebuild.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers will stay at ViN’s NaraTika Community Learning Center in Okhaldhunga. Accommodation is simple and basic, in shared gender-separated dorm rooms with bunk beds, bed linen, blankets and pillows. The center has shared toilets and showers with hot and cold water, kitchen, dining and living areas. Three meals per day, mainly based on Nepali cuisine, and safe filtered drinking water are provided. The working site is within walking distance. Internet can be limited and occasional power cuts may occur; mobile data can be used.
Training during the activity
ViN provides a 3–5 day orientation programme to prepare volunteers for their activities and life in Nepal. Training covers ViN’s work and local communities, Nepalese culture, health and safety, basic Nepali language, practical arrangements and cultural adaptation. Volunteers also receive project-specific orientation, including guidance for community support and post-flood relief and recovery activities. The programme helps volunteers work safely, respectfully and effectively with local communities.
Participant profile
For Individual Volunteering, candidates must be 18–35 years old and legally reside in an eligible country (EU Member States, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Türkiye). Applicants must have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training and must not have previously participated in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering. The total duration of this activity together with previous participation in EU volunteering programmes cannot exceed 12 months.
We are looking for motivated, responsible and adaptable volunteers who are ready to live and work in a rural community in Nepal. Volunteers should be open-minded, culturally sensitive and willing to work closely with local people.
Due to the recent floods, participants should be prepared to support affected communities and contribute to relief and recovery activities according to local needs. Empathy, flexibility, teamwork and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances are especially important.
Volunteers will also work with women and children through community-based activities focusing on child development, life skills, education, women’s empowerment, digital literacy and basic English. Previous experience in humanitarian aid, education, social work, community development or working with women and children is an advantage, but not required. Motivation and willingness to learn and contribute are what matter most.
