🔬 Master 2 Internship – Single-Photon Sources for Quantum Technologies 🇫🇷 | Research at Institut FOTON, France ⚛️💡

About the Internship

Step into the cutting edge of quantum technologies with this Master 2 research internship at the prestigious Institut FOTON (CNRS, UMR6082) in Lannion, France 🇫🇷.
This opportunity focuses on developing on-demand single-photon sources, a cornerstone for quantum communication, sensing, and computation.

Working within the Photonic Systems Team, the intern will join a multidisciplinary group of researchers exploring rare-earth ions (REIs) in optical fibers — a promising platform for scalable, room-temperature quantum light sources.

The project will involve experimental work, from fabricating optical tapers and optimizing emission efficiency to characterizing single-photon performance using advanced photonic techniques.

Internship Objectives 🎯

The selected intern will:

  • 🔥 Learn to fabricate optical fiber tapers using flame-based processes
  • 🧪 Build and optimize a new taper fabrication setup (flame, CO₂ laser, or ceramic oven)
  • ⚙️ Fabricate doped-fiber tapers and test their emission performance
  • 📸 Characterize samples using imaging and Hanbury Brown–Twiss (HBT) setups
  • 💡 Determine the optimal geometry and parameters for robust single-ion isolation
  • 🧭 Establish a reliable, reproducible fabrication protocol for future lab use

Research Focus & Applications ⚛️

The project supports the development of quantum-secure communication systemsquantum memories, and environmentally sustainable quantum photonic devices.
Students will gain practical experience in nanophotonicsfiber opticsquantum optics, and experimental laser systems— vital skills for careers in research, photonics, and quantum engineering.
