EUMETSAT is offering an internship in its User Support and Climate Services Division in Darmstadt, Germany, focused on Machine Learning for Africa: Deploying Machine Learning Models for Weather Prediction in Africa. This is a hands-on technical role for students in computer science, artificial intelligence, earth system science, remote sensing, geoinformatics, or geography who want to contribute to real-world impact in African weather forecasting.
About EUMETSAT
EUMETSAT is Europe's meteorological satellite agency, responsible for establishing and operating meteorological satellites to monitor the weather and climate from space, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. EUMETSAT has 30 Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, TΓΌrkiye, and the United Kingdom.
EUMETSAT and Africa: Over 30 Years of Cooperation
EUMETSAT has a close cooperation with Africa spanning more than 30 years, supporting weather services to use EUMETSAT data in forecasting operations. Currently, EUMETSAT is responsible for supporting the implementation of the AMSAF-nowcasting in cooperation with the African Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres. This project is funded by the European Union.
The Machine Learning for Africa Initiative
A number of machine learning models exist that are driven by EUMETSAT data and targeted at African users:
π§οΈ Rainfall for Africa (Chalmers University)
π©οΈ NCAST (University of Leeds)
The internship addresses the gap of no existing validation/benchmarking toolkit: establishing workflows in the European Weather Cloud to deploy such models, run inference with EUMETSAT data, and enable comparison.
