The Large-Format Pellet Printer You Will Work On
FabLab NiMa has built a large-format pellet 3D printer in its workshop in รvaly near Prague. It has a welded steel frame, ballscrew axes and about 1.3 x 1.5 x 1.5 m of travel, and it runs Duet 3 electronics with RepRapFirmware over CAN bus. The machine was designed in an earlier master's thesis and is now in print testing.
Your Thesis Project: Three Subsystems, One Tool Interface
In this master's thesis you design, build and test three subsystems for the printer. All three are connected through one common tool interface made of a mount, CAN, power and a firmware tool definition.
Subsystem 1: Pellet Feeding Unit
๐พ A pellet feeding unit with closed-loop level control.
Subsystem 2: Extruder for Cement-Based Mortar
๐งฑ An extruder for cement-based mortar.
Subsystem 3: Sensor System for Bed Mapping and Layer Height
๐ก A sensor system for bed mapping and for layer height during printing.
The Mechatronic Content of the Thesis
The listing describes the work in four areas:
โ๏ธ Mechanical design for fabrication and load checks
๐ Wiring to the Duet boards, level sensors and closed-loop feed control
๐งพ RepRapFirmware tool definitions and tool change macros
๐ Data analysis in Python and MATLAB, LLM assisted

What You Will Measure and Document
You will measure changeover time, flow consistency, height map repeatability and layer height deviation. You also document the work so the lab can maintain it:
๐บ๏ธ CAD
๐ช Wiring
๐งฎ Bill of materials (BOM)
๐พ Firmware
Supervision and Possible Extension
On-site supervision comes from mechatronics engineers at the lab. Academic supervision stays with your home university. The listing also says the traineeship can be extended up to 12 months in total after the thesis, if both sides agree. The 6 months start in February 2027 and the start date is flexible.
