Description
Training to empower 25 youth workers and youth leaders to foster meaningful and democratic participation in their local communities, expanding their understanding of democratic processes, human rights, and solidarity-based practices.
Summary of the Project
What does democracy truly mean beyond casting a vote every four years? Is participation limited to the ballot box, or is it a daily practice of shaping public affairs with awareness, care, and intention?
This project, Democracy Lab, invites youth workers, leaders, and active young people to explore democratic participation not merely as an institutional duty, but as a lived experience of community building, solidarity, and empathy. Set against the backdrop of the Spanish general elections happening concurrently during the training, we will use this unique timing to explore and deconstruct political culture, party systems, and electoral laws in Spain, comparing them critically with the realities and systems of other European countries.
Together, we will reflect on how meaningful participation intersects with human rights and collective responsibility.
Aim
To empower 25 youth workers and youth leaders to foster meaningful and democratic participation in their local communities, expanding their understanding of democratic processes, human rights, and solidarity-based practices.
Objectives
To explore the conceptual framework of human rights, political participation, and community building.
To analyze and compare political cultures, party systems, and electoral laws in Spain (coinciding with the general elections) with particularities of participating countries.
To deepen the understanding of meaningful participation and its relationship with community building, solidarity, and social cohesion.
To empower youth workers and youth leaders with practical tools, methodologies, and confidence to drive active participation in their local communities.
To map local community needs and challenges that can be addressed through innovative democratic and participatory practices.
To design and present concrete local follow-up actions focused on reinforcing democratic engagement and community bonds.
To build a sustainable European network of solidarity, mutual learning, and ongoing support among participants and organizations.
Profile of Participants
This training is designed for people who:
Are involved in youth organisations, community initiatives, local movements, or youth work.
Work or volunteer as youth workers, educators, facilitators, or active youth leaders.
Are interested in democratic processes, political culture, human rights, and social inclusion.
Want to explore more meaningful, critical, and long-term ways of engaging young people in public and community life.
Are motivated to contribute actively to an intensive group process, adapt to a shared nature-house environment (including shared daily tasks like cleaning), and bring their learnings back to their local communities.
How Do We Work?
The training course is based on non-formal education, with a strong emphasis on experiential, relational, and participatory learning.
The programme will include:
Learner-centred and participatory methodologies.
Critical analysis of political systems and current electoral dynamics.
Collective reflection, dialogue, and European perspectives.
Practical tools for facilitation, community care, and civic engagement.
Spaces for sharing experiences and co-creation.
Time to design concrete follow-up actions rooted in participantsโ local contexts.
Note on the Venue & Community Life: We will be staying in a private house surrounded by nature in Guriezo, Cantabria. Space will be somewhat tight, and we will operate as an ephemeral community. This means that daily tasks, including cleaning and maintaining our shared space, will be done collectively. This environment is designed to foster deep connections, empathy, and intense, focused teamwork. Make sure you agree to participate in such a community before applying to this training activity.
