The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) is seeking a qualified intern for its Front Office for a period of six months, in a fully remote internship. UNODA advises and assists the Secretary-General in discharging his responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations and implements mandates in the area of disarmament and related security, supporting multilateral efforts toward general and complete disarmament and providing objective, impartial information on disarmament issues to Member States, international organizations, civil society, the media and the public. The Front Office provides substantive and organizational support to the Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs and to the Director and Deputy, provides strategic advice on cross-cutting and emerging disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation issues, facilitates meetings of the Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, and coordinates UNODA-wide policies including on gender and inclusion.

A Fully Remote Internship

This internship is unpaid and is designed to be full-time and fully remote, undertaken outside the duty station. The manager may allow part-time internships at the request of the successful candidate. Under the supervision of a primary supervisor, the intern is assigned to the Front Office and must adhere to the established official working hours five days per week with one hour for a lunch break, and the manager may consider some flexible time arrangements on request.

What the Intern Will Do

๐Ÿ“ Contribute to the preparation of background documents, talking points, speeches, summaries and memoranda

๐Ÿ”Ž Research and analyse open-source information in the areas of disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation, and relevant UN processes, reflecting outcomes in summaries and reports

๐Ÿ“š Assist in preparing for Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (ABDM) meetings, including compiling background reading materials and coordinating with invited speakers

โš–๏ธ Support implementation of UNODA-wide policies, such as its Strategic Plan, UN 2.0, and gender and inclusion policies, including research on gender and inclusion in disarmament and communications outputs on the topic

๐Ÿ“ฐ Support the development and distribution of internal staff engagement communication channels, such as the staff newsletter

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants who have previously served six months in total as a UN intern, or who are close relatives of an active UN Common System staff member, are not eligible.
