Description
The Ateliers are part of the National Youth Service. The project offers young adults (18-30) that are not currently in education employment or training the opportunity to develop skills and remain active. Participants can develop woodwork or sewing skills. The main philosophy of the workshop is to upcycle materials that are donated, giving them a second life. Three designers work with the young people teaching them different techniques and helping them to realize projects on their own. A social worker supports young people in their daily lives and gives them advice, empowering them to reacher their future goals in education or the labour market. The volunteer will be part of the team and participate in all aspects of the workshop including befriending participants, participating in the crafting, updating the Instagram and preparing meals. Activities vary and depend on the volunteers strengths and interests.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Accommodation: Shared living with other international volunteers and Luxembourgish students. Individual bedrooms with a shared kitchen and bathrooms (fully equipped and furnished). Food: We cook lunch together in the atelier during the week. The volunteer can suggest and cook meals. Dietary preferences can be accommodated. Volunteers receive monthly pocket money and food money. Transport: Access to public transport between the accommodation and the atelier. All public transport in Luxembourg is free. You will have access to shared bikes and there is the option of using a shared car.
Training during the activity
The volunteer will gain hands on experience of social work, particularly youth work and will have the option to learn about various concepts and theories, with a focus on the needs of young people in a NEET situation and how to react in a professional context. The volunteer can develop sewing and/or woodwork skills. There is the option of taking French, German and/or Luxembourgish language courses as well as other relevant courses. SNJ organises activities which allow you to discover Luxembourg and network.
Participant profile
Looking for a volunteer who is enthusiastic about working with young adults and interested in our mission. Prior experience in social work and/or non-formal education is important. Daily activities are carried out in English. Speaking some German or French is a big plus for establishing relationships with our part participants. The volunteer is ready to participate in some extra activities like kayak, stand-up paddling, high ropes, archery... Knowledge of crafting (wood or sewing) is beneficial. Experience with social media, particularly Instagram is welcome.
