Do you want to teach, plant and empower communities on the shores of Zanzibar? The Assalam Community Foundation hosts an ESC team volunteering project supporting education, community outreach and permaculture in underserved communities across the island.

About the Project

Assalam Community Foundation (ACF) in Zanzibar hosts volunteers to support education, community outreach and permaculture activities in underserved communities. Volunteers contribute to educational programmes for children and youth, vocational training for women, environmental actions and cultural exchange initiatives. The project promotes peace, sustainability, empowerment and social inclusion, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and volunteers gain hands-on experience in education, community development and sustainable practices in a multicultural environment.


What You'll Do

๐Ÿ“š Teach and facilitate workshops in science, arts, sports, leadership and entrepreneurship for children and youth.

๐ŸŒฑ Support permaculture gardens, tree planting, beach cleaning and food aid.

๐Ÿค Support vocational training for women and cultural exchange initiatives, working at ACF's campus in Kizimkazi and through outreach programmes across Zanzibar, reaching children, youth, women and orphans in remote villages.

Training During the Activity

๐ŸŽ“ Volunteers receive task-specific training in teaching and facilitation skills, vocational training support, permaculture and sustainable agriculture, and event and workshop management.

๐Ÿ’ก Personal and professional development training is also provided in entrepreneurship and leadership, intercultural communication and teamwork, and humanitarian principles and community development, alongside ongoing mentorship, weekly evaluations and continuous support.


Accommodation, Food and Transport

๐Ÿ  Volunteers are accommodated in shared rooms (3 to 4 people per room) on the ACF campus, with WiFi access and no distance between accommodation and workplace.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ All meals are fully provided by ACF, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, with tea, coffee and water available throughout the day.

โœˆ๏ธ Volunteers are picked up from Zanzibar Airport by ACF and transported to the project site. Local transport for personal travel during free time is at the volunteer's own expense.

Who Can Apply

๐ŸŒ Young people aged 18 to 30, motivated to work with children, youth and women in education, community outreach and permaculture activities.

๐Ÿค Volunteers should be open-minded, respectful of local customs and values, willing to live and work in a shared, community-based environment, comfortable working in teams, and able to follow community rules and demonstrate punctuality, commitment and active participation. Basic English communication skills are required, along with an interest in cultural exchange, community development and sustainable practices.
