Podgorica’s Old Town — Stara Varoš — is not just a location. It is a living memory of a city’s past, full of stories that most tourists walk past without ever hearing. This ESC placement is for someone who wants to change that.

Akcelerator Društvenih Promjena — Zid is an organisation based in Montenegro working at the intersection of youth work, volunteering, and social policy. Their project focuses on preserving and promoting the cultural identity of Stara Varoš — the Old Town of Podgorica — through cultural interpretation, storytelling, and creative community engagement.

This placement is organised in partnership with sending organisation ICJA – Freiwilligenaustausch Weltweit and is open to participants from Germany only.

What Is This Role About?

As tourism in Montenegro continues to grow year on year, the importance of telling the right stories about places like Stara Varoš becomes more urgent. As a volunteer, you will be the person who brings those stories to life — organising guided walks, designing promotional campaigns, and connecting with similar initiatives across other cities. The work is creative, people-facing, and rooted in genuine cultural value.

Activities

🚶 Organising volunteer tourist walks twice a week — each approximately one hour long — offering tourists engaging insights into the history, culture, and hidden stories of Stara Varoš

📢 Preparing and implementing a promotional campaign for the organised activities and the cultural value of the Old Town — including both design and execution

🌐 Connecting with volunteers from other cities running similar cultural initiatives

🏢 Working from the Upbeat Hub office — 5 hours per day

🔹 Basic command of English to facilitate communication

🔹 Permanent resident of a programme country — Germany only for this placement

Training & Support

📚 ESC volunteers receive training and all essential information about Stara Varoš and the Old Town before starting activities

👩‍💼 A dedicated mentor responsible for answering questions and supervising the volunteer’s work throughout the placement

Accommodation & Practical Details

🏠 Accommodation provided by the project in a shared apartment with other volunteers

💶 Volunteers receive monthly payments for personal expenses

⏱️ Working hours: 5 hours per day at the Upbeat Hub office
