A public library in Les Pavillons-sous-Bois, France โ€” just 45 minutes from Paris โ€” is seeking an individual ESC volunteer for a full-year placement focused on inclusion, intercultural mediation, and creative activities. The Pavillons-sous-Bois Public Library is dedicated to making culture and reading accessible to all, with a strong emphasis on solidarity and welcoming multicultural communities. As a volunteer, you will develop inclusion projects, animate workshops for children, create multilingual tools, and be an active part of library life โ€” while living in a shared house with four other volunteers and having Paris on your doorstep. A basic level of French is required for this opportunity.

๐ŸŒ Did You Know? Les Pavillons-sous-Bois is located in Seine-Saint-Denis โ€” one of the most culturally diverse departments in France, home to over 130 nationalities. This extraordinary multicultural richness makes it one of the most vibrant and globally connected communities in all of Europe, and a truly meaningful setting for a volunteer working on inclusion and intercultural dialogue.

What Will You Do?

๐ŸŒ Multicultural Inclusion Project: Develop and lead a project centred on welcoming multicultural communities โ€” including people who do not speak French โ€” into the library’s services and activities.
๐Ÿ“ข Public Information & ESC Promotion: Inform the public about the library’s services and the European Solidarity Corps programme, acting as an ambassador for both.
๐ŸŽจ Creative & Scientific Workshops: Animate creative and scientific workshops as part of the library’s cultural programme and partnerships with local organisations.
๐Ÿ“– Multilingual Readings & Songs: Conduct multilingual read-aloud sessions for children and share songs from your own language and cultural background โ€” a key tool for inclusion and intercultural exchange.
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Tool Creation: Create practical inclusion tools โ€” translating subscription forms, producing a multilingual video presenting the library, and developing other resources to make the library more accessible.
๐Ÿ“‹ Daily Library Tasks: Assist the librarians with their daily tasks and operational needs throughout the year.
๐Ÿ’ก Your Own Ideas: Volunteers are actively encouraged to propose and develop their own project ideas โ€” making the most of their personal skills, passions, and creativity.
๐ŸŒ Did You Know? Public libraries in France are officially recognised as essential social infrastructure โ€” not just for books, but for cultural mediation, civic education, and community cohesion. France has one of the most developed library networks in Europe, with over 16,000 public lending libraries serving communities from rural villages to the heart of Paris.

Who Can Apply?

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Language (Required): A basic level of both French and English is necessary for this position โ€” French for day-to-day library work and community interaction, English for general communication within the volunteer house.
๐Ÿ‘ถ Children Work: The volunteer should genuinely enjoy working with children aged 1โ€“12 and feel comfortable in an educational and creative environment with young audiences.
๐Ÿ“š Love of Reading & Sharing: A love for books, reading, and sharing stories and knowledge with others is at the heart of this volunteering role.
๐Ÿ’ป Digital Comfort: Comfort with digital tools and general communication in a public service context is expected.
๐Ÿค Social & Team-Oriented: As the volunteer will live in a shared house with four others, being sociable, collaborative, and a good team player is essential for a positive experience.
๐ŸŒˆ Open-Minded & Creative: The ideal volunteer is open-minded, creative, helpful, engaged, and genuinely motivated to contribute to inclusion and cultural accessibility in the community.

Accommodation, Food & Travel

๐Ÿ  Accommodation: The volunteer lives in a large shared house with a garden, together with 4 other volunteers. Each person has their own private room and shares a bathroom, kitchen, living room, and terrace. The house has WiFi and TV and is a 15-minute walk from the library.
๐Ÿš† Transport: A monthly subscription for the entire regional transport network is fully covered โ€” giving access to Paris (approx. 45 minutes by train) and the wider รŽle-de-France region at no cost.
๐Ÿ’ถ Monthly Allowance: 500 EUR per month provided for food and personal expenses.
โœˆ๏ธ Travel Costs: International travel costs to and from France are covered according to ESC distance band rules.

Training & Learning

๐ŸŽ“ Integration Training: The first two days are dedicated to structured training to support the volunteer’s integration into local life and the host organisation.
๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท French Language Workshops: Weekly socio-linguistic workshops in French are available throughout the year for volunteers who wish to improve their language skills.
๐Ÿ“‹ Thematic Training: Occasional training courses on subjects related to the socio-cultural field can be offered throughout the year based on the volunteer’s interests and needs.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ National Seminars: Two seminars are organised by the French Erasmus+ National Agency, providing additional learning, networking, and peer exchange opportunities at a national level.
