This internship offers a unique opportunity to work with refugee and immigrant youth, helping them express their creativity and identity through photography. As a Youth Photography Teaching Assistant Intern, you will support the lead instructor in delivering an engaging photography program at the NYC Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration (RAI) office.

🎯 Scope of Work:
The intern will help plan, coordinate, and facilitate youth photography classes — supporting newcomer youth in developing technical photography skills, creative storytelling, and confidence. The role combines education, creativity, and cultural exchange, making it ideal for candidates passionate about youth empowerment and visual arts.

📷 Responsibilities:

Youth Photography Program Planning & Coordination

  • Research photography concepts, create slides, graphics, and handouts.
  • Translate class materials using a translation service (training provided).
  • Prepare and organize cameras, equipment, and digital storage for student photos.
  • Maintain equipment inventory and report any issues.
  • Support student recruitment, enrollment, and consent form collection.
  • Help coordinate field trips, guest speakers, and partnerships.
  • Attend curriculum meetings, share feedback, and support communication across teams.
  • Provide translation or interpretation during sessions as needed (training provided).

Youth Photography Class Duties (February – May 2026)

  • Assist or lead weekly lessons on camera operation, composition, lighting, and storytelling.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group support for students.
  • Set up and break down photography gear before and after each class.
  • Collect, label, and archive student work using Adobe Lightroom or Bridge.
  • Supervise students during photography walks, museum visits, and exhibitions.
  • Document project activities and behind-the-scenes moments.
  • Support communication and translation for multilingual students.
  • Track project progress and contribute creative ideas to improve the program.

🎓 Learning Objectives:

  • Gain experience in photography education and mentoring refugee & immigrant youth.
  • Develop lesson planning, classroom management, and individualized teaching skills.
  • Build professional experience in an educational nonprofit focused on cultural integration.
  • Strengthen facilitation skills by supporting partnerships between IRC and photography organizations.

📋 Requirements:

  • Must be based in the U.S., a U.S. citizen or have U.S. work authorization.
  • Currently enrolled in or graduated from a college or master’s program in Photography, Art, Design, Media Studies, or related field.
  • At least 1 year of coursework in photography/visual arts.
  • Minimum 2 years of DSLR camera experience (education or personal projects).
  • Proficiency in Adobe Lightroom.
  • Portfolio of 5–10 original images showing strong visual storytelling.
  • Experience working with youth (refugee/immigrant experience preferred).
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Fluency in English required; other preferred languages: Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, Dari, Pashto, Arabic.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Self-starter and team player.
  • Must adhere to IRC’s professional and ethical standards.

🕓 Details:

  • Location: Hybrid (New York, NY – RAI USA Office)
  • Duration: Part-time (15–20 hours per week, February–May 2026)
  • Schedule: Must be available to work in-person on Saturdays.
  • Compensation: Unpaid internship
