Choose Your Topic: Two Internship Options

The vacancy lets you choose among the following topics:

1๏ธโƒฃ Topic 1: AI-Assisted Analysis of Compact Clocks

2๏ธโƒฃ Topic 2: AI aided design for THz applications

Topic 1: Analysing Compact Clock Anomalies

You would contribute to the analysis and characterisation of space atomic clocks, with a particular focus on the investigation of compact clock anomalies, including frequency jumps and their correlation with housekeeping telemetry parameters.

You would work with real measurement data obtained from long-term laboratory and environmental test campaigns, analyse clock performance and compare the observed behaviour against existing in-house clock models.

Topic 1: Post-Processing and Visualisation of Time and Frequency Data

The activities include post-processing and visualisation of time and frequency data from two kinds of timing technologies:

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Conventional space-qualified atomic clocks

๐Ÿ”‹ Emerging low Size, Weight and Power (low-SWaP) timing technologies

You would identify trends, recurring patterns, frequency excursions and deviations from the expected clock behaviour, while assessing potential correlations with operational and environmental factors.

Topic 1: Machine Learning for Atomic Clock Monitoring

The internship also provides exposure to state-of-the-art techniques for atomic clock monitoring and performance assessment. You would investigate and evaluate the applicability of data-driven approaches, including machine learning methods, for anomaly detection, classification and prediction.

Particular emphasis is placed on developing tools and methodologies capable of supporting the automated analysis of large telemetry and frequency datasets.

Topic 1: What You Would Gain

Through this work, you would gain hands-on experience in:

โฒ๏ธ Space timing technologies

ใ€ฐ๏ธ Signal processing

๐Ÿ“Š Statistical analysis

๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ Data analytics

๐Ÿง  Machine learning

You would also contribute to activities relevant to current and future navigation, telecommunications and scientific missions relying on highly stable frequency references.

Topic 2: How THz Receivers Are Designed Today

The design of millimetre and sub-millimetre wave receivers featuring Schottky diode devices as non-linear elements for mixers and multipliers is traditionally done via a combination of 3D Electro-Magnetic (EM) simulations and linear/non-linear circuit simulations with harmonic-balanced capabilities.

Software EM/circuit suites usually integrate both types of solvers with direct interaction between modules. However, the optimisation and circuit topology, including waveguide cavities, active device modelling and packaging, rely heavily on the designer's experience. In that respect, the final circuit design often looks like the previous ones with only minor modifications.

Topic 2: Training an AI on Past Designs

Your objective for this internship is to train an Artificial Intelligence (AI) using existing designs successfully demonstrated in the past and recently published designs from peer-reviewed literature. The goal is to improve the performance of combined building blocks (mixer and multiplier) in a co-design approach at the higher integration level, for best system performance.

Topic 2: What You Would Investigate

You would investigate the use of AI to explore:

๐Ÿ” Novel circuit topologies with improved waveguide coupling

๐Ÿงฎ Better non-linear device models

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Possibly coupling to a thermal software package

Topic 2: Why It Matters for Future Missions

This work would greatly benefit potential future integration and performance optimisation of radiometer instruments on board future meteorological missions. The vacancy names the next generation of MetOp-SG, AWS (sub)-millimetre-wave payload instruments and EE12 Keystone THz spectrometer candidate missions.

Topic 2: Beyond THz, Towards D-Band and Above

The new design methodology based on AI could be extended in the future to any transmit/receiver development at higher frequencies (D-band and above), where the packaging of active devices (transistors, diodes and similar) plays a key role in the optimisation of performance.
