A Place in an International Team

As the intern in the team, you would join an international, collaborative and supportive environment. You gain direct exposure to real spacecraft operations and see how software, automation and operational processes are used in a unique control centre environment.

Your Field of Activity: Python for Spacecraft Operations

You will design and implement Python scripts, tools and frameworks that support routine spacecraft operations and automate recurring tasks. Your tools will be used by the Flight Control Team in a live mission environment and will contribute directly to safer and more efficient operations.

A Scope Shaped Around Your Profile

The exact scope of the activities will be decided together with you, depending on your profile, interests and the mission needs. The possible tasks include both development of new tools and adaptation of existing tools, making them generic and improving harmonisation across the different missions.

Example Use Cases

The vacancy gives these example use cases for the tools you could work on:

๐Ÿ” Automating daily checks of spacecraft state

๐Ÿ“ Generating reports

๐Ÿ“Š Creating dashboards

๐Ÿงฎ Building tools for modelling expected spacecraft states

From ESOC Data to the Operator's Screen

The activities include extracting relevant data from ESOC internal interfaces, processing and validating it, and presenting the results clearly to operators.

A Reusable Python Library and Sharing Your Results

The resulting tools should be packaged in a reusable Python library with helpful documentation and examples. You will also share your results with the team through short demonstrations or training sessions.

What You Will Learn at ESOC

During the internship you will learn about the mission control systems, tools and interfaces used at ESOC. You will gain hands-on experience in how satellite operations are planned and conducted during routine activities, with direct exposure to the Flight Control Team and the control room environment.

If you are comparing internships abroad for students, this vacancy shows what a technical placement inside a space operations centre can look like.

Duration and Start Date

According to ESA's announcement of its 2027 student internships, the internship lasts 3 to 6 months and starts from February 2027. The exact start date is agreed with the ESA tutor.

A candidate can apply to a maximum of 2 internship vacancies.
