Meet the FOX Team at ESOC
You will directly contribute to the objectives of the Facility for Operations Experimentation (FOX), based at ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt. FOX is an initiative designed to support:
🧪 Operational experimentation
✅ Technology validation
🛰️ In-orbit demonstration and validation (IOD/IOV)
🏅 Qualification activities
🔁 End-to-end operational assessment and experimentation support, for both traditional and New Space missions
Why FOX Exists
FOX facilitates experimentation, qualification, interoperability and operational validation activities that may be difficult to perform within purely operational service environments. Experimental applications, services and concepts can be tested and progressively adopted by mainstream missions. FOX also contributes to increased interoperability and operational readiness across the evolving New Space ecosystem.
Who Uses FOX
FOX supports ESA internal users as well as universities, research institutes and companies that prototype, test and validate innovative operations concepts and technologies. It does so by fostering innovation, experimentation and cross-functional collaboration in the domain of ground operations. Typical users range from:
🌌 Traditional space missions
📦 CubeSat and SmallSat manufacturers and operators
💻 Ground segment developers
📡 Ground station service providers
Your Role in the FOX Team
You will be part of the FOX team, gaining insight into operational challenges and contributing to the development of novel solutions for future mission support. You will be actively involved in ongoing experimental activities, including:
🛠️ System prototyping
🔬 Testing
🔗 Integration
📈 Performance evaluation
💬 Participating in regular technical discussions and collaborative reviews across disciplines
The internship gives you hands-on experience in a highly dynamic and interdisciplinary environment at the intersection of operations, engineering and research.

Choose Your Topic
You can choose between two internship topics. Each one centres on a different part of the FOX ground segment environment.
Topic 1: DIFI Integration and Validation
The first topic is the integration and validation of Digital Intermediate Frequency Interoperability (DIFI) solutions. Activities include:
📻 Using Software Defined Radio (SDR) and digitizers/samplers, which are integrated, configured and validated within the FOX operational environment
🧩 Focusing on the implementation of DIFI to enable SDR interoperability using a generic DIFI-enabled sampler
🎛️ Learning how to configure and operate SDRs, especially regarding user-friendliness, sustainability and reliability
Topic 2: Harmonising Ground Station Interfaces and Protocols
The second topic is the harmonisation of ground station interfaces and protocols for enhanced interoperability. You will contribute to:
🔌 Integrating external systems that use different protocols into the centralised FOX ground segment environment
🧰 Tailoring and validating interfaces to improve interoperability for real-time telecommanding and telemetry reception, as well as tracking and scientific data downlink
🎯 Reaching the final goal of centralising services so that users can transparently adapt well-established standardised protocols without developing custom interfaces
🎓 Learning how mission users connect to ground stations, with a special focus on interoperability and its trade-offs in real operational environments
