Eight roles across the United Nations system are open for applications right now, ranging from a stipend-supported internship in Tokyo to a senior D-1 policy leadership post in New York. At Youth Works Hub, we reviewed this batch so you know exactly what each one asks for before you apply. The spread covers six countries and three UN entry points: internships for students and recent graduates, mid-career professional posts at the P-2 and P-4 level, and one senior D-1 leadership role, so there is something here whether you are applying for your first UN experience or your next promotion.

What stands out is how different these roles actually are day to day. In Tokyo, UNU-IAS is looking for someone to help run global networks and produce podcasts and webinars at the intersection of AI, education and sustainability. In Copenhagen, UNFPA needs a P-2 analyst to strengthen procurement partnerships and lead a small supply chain team. Geneva alone has two openings: a communications internship with ITU's Partner2Connect coalition, and a P-4 role at IOM building out a global private-sector fundraising pipeline. Further out, IOM Armenia is hiring an international consultant to design a national training curriculum on biometrics, UNJSPF in New York needs an Oracle Cloud ERP architect for its pension fund systems, ICSC is recruiting a D-1 to lead UN-wide compensation policy, and ICAO's regional office in Mexico is hiring a P-4 aeronautical information specialist covering the Americas. Deadlines run from today, 7 September, through 9 September, so the earliest closings need attention first.

Compensation and level vary by role. The UNU-IAS internship comes with a monthly stipend for interns without their own funding; the ITU internship in Geneva has no listed stipend requirement beyond ITU member-state nationality. The professional posts sit at UN salary grades P-2 through D-1, several with post adjustment on top of base salary, and the ICAO role in Mexico lists a net salary around $84,672 a year plus post adjustment. None of these are volunteering placements: they are paid UN employment or consultancy contracts, so expect standard UN recruitment steps (written test, competency-based interview, reference checks) rather than an ESC-style application form.

Across these eight roles, one thing holds: the UN system hires at every career stage, not just at entry level. Youth Works Hub tracked one internship for students with no experience required, a P-2 analyst post for someone starting their professional career, four P-4 roles for mid-to-senior specialists, and one D-1 post for a seasoned HR leader, spread across Japan, Denmark, Switzerland, Armenia, the United States and Mexico. If you have been assuming UN careers only mean New York or Geneva headquarters jobs, this batch is a reminder that agencies also hire specialists for country and regional offices, and that internships remain a real entry route even when they come with strict nationality or funding conditions attached.

The deadlines split into three narrow windows: three roles close today, 7 September, three more close 8 September, and the final two close 9 September, so there is no room to wait on the earliest ones. According to Youth Works Hub's review, none of these are volunteering or Erasmus+ mobility placements: every listing here is either paid UN staff employment or a paid consultancy contract, so check the eligibility, experience and language requirements on each listing page before you apply. Bookmark this one, check which role fits your background and stage, and apply before the window on your target role closes.

Not into volunteering this time? This week Youth Works Hub also lists fully funded ESC volunteering placements across Europe โ†’ ESC Volunteering.
