International justice runs on language. Before the International Criminal Court can investigate or prosecute, evidence and core documents have to be transcribed and translated accurately — often in hard-to-source "situation languages" spoken where the crimes occurred. The ICC's Office of the Prosecutor is hiring an Associate Translation Coordination Officer at the P-2 level in The Hague to help make that happen. About the Office and the Unit
The Integrated Services Division (ISD) within the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) centralises the specialised support functions that provide cross-cutting support to the Office. Headed by a Director, ISD manages the reliable and cost-effective delivery of integrated services — information, knowledge and evidence management, forensic science, language services, and tracking and information fusion — and works to develop new approaches and modern tools that strengthen the effectiveness of the Office.
The Language Services Unit (LSU) forms part of ISD and provides critical close-support functions to the OTP. Across the preliminary examination, investigation and prosecution phases, the Unit delivers field, event and remote interpretation; transcription of audio and video material; translation of OTP evidence and core Office documentation; and other services requiring language expertise, such as summary translation, redacting and editing.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Associate Translation Coordination Officer works within the Language Services Unit and reports to the Translation Officer, with responsibility for:
🗂️ Supporting the Translation Officer in ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality, fit-for-purpose transcription and translation services for OTP operations, mainly for situation languages — including proactive planning, prioritising requests, determining feasibility, and coordinating task assignments to staff transcribers and translators and to external freelancers;
🔎 Identifying, testing, evaluating and selecting freelance translators and translation staff to meet OTP translation requirements, with a focus on situation languages;
🎓 Supporting the Translation Officer in overseeing and conducting induction and training for new translators, primarily in situation languages;
✅ Assisting in developing and implementing quality-assurance mechanisms to ensure consistency and accuracy of translations;
📋 Contributing to the development, update and implementation of translation guidelines, procedures and workflows — particularly those related to situation languages;
📊 Supporting the Translation Officer in monitoring workload levels and in preparing budget and human-resources plans and recommendations;
➕ Performing other related duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
🎓 Education: An advanced university degree in languages, linguistics, translation or any relevant field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
💼 Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience (four (4) years with a first-level degree) in translation, linguistics, language service provision or any relevant field is required. Experience using CAT and MT tools is required, and experience within an international organisation is highly desirable.

Languages
Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court (English or French) is required, and working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish) or a situation-related language — such as Ukrainian, Burmese, Dari, Pashto, Tagalog, Cebuano, Hebrew or Swahili — is an asset.
Terms and Eligibility
📄 This is an Established Post (Post Number E-1104). For initial appointments, the Court offers a two-year appointment with the possibility of extension, including a six-month probationary period. A roster of suitable candidates may be established from this selection process.

🌍 The post is to be filled by a national of a State Party to the ICC Statute, or of a State that has signed and is engaged in the ratification process, or is engaged in the accession process — pursuant to the Assembly of States Parties' moratorium on recruiting nationals of non-States Parties.
