UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security. The UN Women Japan Liaison Office (JLO) was established in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, in April 2015. The office works on extending policy dialogue by holding lectures, public events, and building strategic partnerships. In particular, the JLO carries out its work through targeted outreach to various actors, including the government, parliaments, private enterprises, academics, NGOs, media and other organizations, to keep them informed of UN Women's work and role with regard to gender equality and women's empowerment.


A prospective intern will assist in the planning and implementation of the office's communications, advocacy and outreach strategies, to increase the understanding and awareness of UN Women among its stakeholders, such as the media, policy makers, the private sector, students, academia and the public.

Description of Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Director of the JLO, the main responsibilities of the intern will be to assist the work of the JLO, including the following:

๐Ÿ“ฑ Supporting the office's communications work, including social media outreach and website management

๐Ÿค Assisting the JLO on public and private sector partnership building for mobilizing resources for UN Women by engaging in research, coordination, and producing background and partnership-related materials

โœŠ Supporting the work of the Unstereotype Alliance (UA) Japan National Chapter by raising awareness of UA's initiatives through drafting visibility materials and preparing resources for UA meetings

๐Ÿข Assisting in advocacy activities with a focus on the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs), including planning WEPs workshops for private sector companies

๐ŸŽฌ Helping to produce communications materials such as fliers, posters, videos, video interviews and presentations

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Assisting in the coordination of advocacy activities for the JLO with private, public and academic entities

๐Ÿ“ Assisting with research and drafting speeches and presentations for the Director

Learning Objectives

The internship offers the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UN Women's work, complementing women's development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation, as well as other international studies, including law. By the end of the internship, the intern will be able to:

Who Can Apply

Applicants to the UN internship programme must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (a second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (a bachelor's level or equivalent). No professional work experience is required, but a field of study closely related to the internship is required.
