If you want hands-on experience in grassroots social work, community outreach, and youth empowerment, this internship in Ljubljana puts you right in the field. Working alongside the team at Institute My Rainbow, you will support marginalized young people, help run workshops and research, and learn how a community-based NGO actually operates from the inside.

About the Organisation

Institute My Rainbow is a Slovenian NGO whose work is mobile and community-based, built on openness, transparency, visibility, and active presence in public spaces. Instead of a fixed office, the team uses public spaces in Ljubljana, such as public libraries, for coworking and meetings. You will work especially closely with a core team of three people, alongside other interns, students on practicum, and volunteers whom you will support in their learning.

What You Will Do

In the beginning, you will plan, implement, and evaluate activities together with the volunteers and target groups, such as leisure evenings, focus groups, sports activities, street actions and interventions, and internal educational activities. The exact tasks also depend on which projects are running at the time.

๐Ÿง Street work with marginalized young people: approaching youth in public spaces, engaging in conversation, and offering appropriate support

๐Ÿค Collaboration with volunteers: supporting them in developing and implementing their ideas and facilitating group activities

๐Ÿ” Qualitative research: conducting interviews with community members about their everyday life and experiences with gender-based or queerphobic violence, then coding and analysing the data

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿซ Workshop planning and facilitation: preparing and leading workshops for students of social work, psychosocial support, or psychology

๐Ÿ“š Non-formal education: drafting ideas and leading workshops for young people, youth workers, and social work students from Slovenia and abroad

๐ŸŽฌ Content creation: producing videos, articles, and event materials

โœ๏ธ Research and writing: preparing articles, grant applications, and related materials

You will also work with the team on administrative tasks like grant applications, and by the end you will be able to independently plan, manage, and carry out administrative processes, including writing and monitoring grant applications. You will join local and international networking activities and public presentations at larger youth events, help evaluate and monitor the organisation's work, write reports, archive documentation, and attend regular team intervisions.

Towards the end of the internship, you will pilot your own ideas and implement activities with and for the target group, gain a clear overview of the organisation's programmes in their broader context, learn to write a project based on local community needs, and gain experience working with service users from different intersectional backgrounds, including LGBT+ people, neurodivergent individuals, and people facing mental health challenges.

A Typical Day

๐Ÿ•— 8:00 to 8:30: team meeting

๐Ÿ“ 8:30 to 10:00: individual administrative work, writing articles, research

๐ŸŒ 12:00 to 14:00: street youth work (outreach and awareness raising) in a public space in Ljubljana

This is only one example, and many days will look different. Work usually takes place in the morning, but on days with afternoon activities the schedule shifts accordingly. Working days are Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend activities; when interns work a weekend, they take a compensating day off during the week.
