⭐️ Activity Title
Nature Action Days in the Gesäuse and Styrian Eisenwurzen
🔷 Activity Details
Description
Join Nature Action Days: Gesäuse & Eisenwurzen, a 19-day volunteering project in the Austrian Alps focused on environmental action, sustainability, and solidarity. Together with volunteers from different countries, you will actively support biodiversity protection in Gesäuse National Park and Nature and Geopark Steirische Eisenwurzen. Participants will work outdoors for around 5–6 hours per day, mainly removing invasive plant species and helping maintain sensitive natural habitats. The activities contribute directly to protecting local ecosystems, native plants, and biodiversity in one of Austria’s most remarkable mountain regions. Volunteers will also learn about environmental protection, climate justice, sustainable lifestyles, and grassroots ecological initiatives through discussions, workshops, and shared reflection.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Participants will stay in two different accommodations surrounded by nature in the Austrian Alps. During the first week, the group will stay in a mountain guesthouse near Johnsbach with full board provided. In the second week, volunteers will move to a well-equipped eco-lodge in the Eisenwurzen region, where meals will be prepared together as a group. Travel costs are reimbursed according to ESC rules. Local transport between project locations and accommodations will be organised by the hosting team.
Training during the activity
Participants will gain practical and non-formal learning experience throughout the project. Training will include biodiversity protection, invasive species management, sustainability, climate justice, and environmental activism. Volunteers will learn directly from local experts and through hands-on conservation work in protected natural areas. The project also encourages peer learning, group reflection, teamwork, intercultural communication, and active participation connected to the values of peace, solidarity, and ecological responsibility promoted by SCI.
Participant profile
We are looking for motivated young people interested in nature conservation, sustainability, solidarity, and collective action. Participants should be ready for physical outdoor work in mountain environments, including hiking and manual activities such as removing invasive plant species. No previous experience is required, but openness to group living, teamwork, ecological learning, and intercultural exchange is important. The project is especially suitable for people interested in environmental activism, climate justice, grassroots initiatives, and volunteering connected to peace and social responsibility values promoted by Service Civil International.
